Living's philosophy grew from our own experiences which made us very
conscious of our personal consumption. We felt it was important to
provide these alternative options to others. We sought out products
that had as little impact on the environment as possible and only
work with companies who support an economy that includes fair
treatment of employees, good working conditions, fair labor practices
and a living wage. We like to think we vote with our dollars, so we
encourage you to purchase environmentally sustainable products that
will improve the health of the planet and the farmers that grow the
crops. These choices will improve your health and wellbeing too.
On our site
you'll find U.S. made, sustainably harvested oak, maple, cherry and
walnut bed frames and furniture. We have organic mattresses and many
options for organic bedding including toppers, comforters, sheets and
pillows. Our eco home products include bath and kitchen towels, table
linens, baby products, recycled glassware, wooden eco kitchen
products, organic cotton clothing and more.
intention from day one was to promote truly organic, sustainable and
environmentally sound home products and clothing. We are happy we've
been able to provide healthy alternatives to conventional synthetic
textiles, mattresses and bedding all of these years, before it became
popular to be "green", before "green" went
"greenwashing" has become so much more prevalent. Companies
are jumping on the bandwagon to cash in on so called "green"
products. Similar to "whitewashing" in politics,
"greenwashing" is when a company or organization spends
more time and money claiming to be “green” than they really are.
More money is spent on advertising and marketing these claims, than
is spent on improving they're own business practices that would
actually minimize their impact on the environment.
So don't be
fooled by the so called "natural" or "green"
labels on latex mattresses and toppers out there. If it says natural,
recycled, or made with soy or green tea, just check to make sure the
label doesn't list polyurethane, polyester or any other synthetically
made petrochemical based products. Unfortunately, the unregulated
conventional mattress industry can call it natural even if it only
contains 30% organic or truly natural latex!
We have 12 years
experience selling, what we then called, 100% natural latex
mattresses. Now, most of the latex is actually certified organic. We
have settled on who we think of as our best suppliers for quality,
integrity and customer service. As a website we are not able to post
all the manufacturers we work with, as some only allow brick and
mortar stores to do that. However, if you're familiar with us and the
mattresses we did sell in our showroom, we'd be glad if you'd talk to
us! We have become very good at determining the appropriate mattress
and firmness levels for our customers. Some of our manufacturers
provide a comfort exchange too, so we can make sure you are
completely happy with your purchase!
have had a lot of transitions as Just
We opened our first store in Sebastopol, CA in 2002. After 5 years,
we expanded to a larger store about double in size. Due to many
factors beyond our control, including the 2008 economic downturn, we
were forced to close at the end of 2010. We had a little stint in
Petaluma, CA from 2012-2013 when we opened a showroom for mattresses
with an attached warehouse to ship and receive products. Since then,
we've downsized to a small office and storage space in Sebastopol and
have been operating as a website ever since. Despite our many
changes, we've hung on and continue to offer the best in organic, eco
friendly, U.S. made, fair wage and fair trade products. We offer free
pick-up to our local customers as a value added service too.
