Latex in “The Natural Bedroom” mattresses and pillows are made using the Dunlop process. It starts with the natural white liquid tapped from rubber trees, in southeast Asia, combined with water and whipped to a froth. Sodium flouride, zinc oxide, fatty acid soaps and sulfer are essential to the vulcanization, foaming and curing process. Air is also injected to achieve the desired density. It is then poured onto a continuous moving assembly mold and heated to 220 degrees to cure. It is then washed three times to remove residues left over after curing. The final product is virtually 100% pure natural latex. The density of latex is designated by numbers on the ILD scale: 15 ILD = Extra Soft – used in pillows 20 ILD = Soft – used in mattress pads and pillow top mattresses 25 ILD = Medium – lowest density used in mattresses 31 ILD = Firm – middle firmness in mattresses 35 ILD = Extra Firm – highest density in mattresses
The 100% Natural Latex mattresses range from Medium to Extra Firm. The most common choice from our customers is the Firm, although we have also sold a number of Medium density. We discourage choosing Extra Firm unless you want a mattress that comes close to sleeping on a hard surface. The Natural Aurora and the Paradise have Soft latex on top and bottom and the Dream Lite combines a Firm core with a Soft top layer. The Natural Caress also has a Soft top layer. Back to Top

A resource developed by The Natural Bedroom. The results of this program is our distinctive line of woolen products, scrupulously cleaned and created without bleaches, formaldehyde, dyes or animal cruelty by over 50 ranchers. The "Pure Grow Wool" program asks participating ranchers to follow organic farming practices including: no chemical animal feed or hormones; free-range grazing on land without pesticides; ranchers exercising responsible land management; a shearing process in which ranchers use a clean room and a surface free of dirt, dust and pests; care taken to minimize stress on the animals and to keep the wool as clean as possible during shearing and to eliminate any need for chemical treatments to remove impurities. The wool is taken to a scouring mill where it is soaked in hot water to remove loose matter and natural lanolin. It is washed a minimum of two times with a safe biodegradable detergent and rinsed in hot water.
All of our mattresses have wool because besides being a natural fire retardant, it's the perfect insulator. It breathes and wicks away moisture from your skin. It doesn't absorb moisture because it's a hollow fiber. It will then evaporate when aired out, which we recommend daily by folding your covers down in the morning. Because it doesn't hold moisture it doesn't attract mold, mildew or dust mites. Back to Top

Growing and buying organic cotton helps reduce the world's usage of pesticides, herbicides and the caustic chemicals used for processing. Here are some documented facts 1) Approximately 25% of the world's insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides (including herbicides, insecticides, and defoliants.) (Allan Woodburn) 2) Fifty-five million pounds of pesticides were sprayed on the 12.8 million acres of conventional cotton grown in the U.S. in 2003 (4.3 pounds/ acre), ranking cotton third behind corn and soybeans in total amount of pesticides sprayed. (USDA) 3) Over 2.03 billion pounds of synthetic fertilizers were applied to conventional cotton in 2000 (142 pounds/acre), making cotton the fourth most heavily fertilized crop behind corn, winter wheat, and soybeans. (USDA) 4) The Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2000 in the United States as "possible," "likely," "probable," or "known" human carcinogens (acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin). (EPA) 5) It takes roughly one-third of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton for just one T-shirt. (SCP) Organic clothing manufacturers are also required to follow strict guidelines for raw material processing and dying. There are natural dyes and low impact dyes that ban the use of heavy metals and other caustic chemicals. Many of these chemicals are petroleum based, containing heavy metals and numerous carcinogenic elements, which do not bio-degrade. They leech into the water table, rivers, lakes and oceans, contaminating them and everything else, including humans, and will linger for centuries to come.

Our US-Made and tempered innersprings are covered with layers upon layers of fluffy organic cotton. Then for the ultimate touch we wrap it with our Pure Grow Wool™ then covered with organic cotton outer fabric. No fire retardants, natural or synthetic, are added to this mattress; therefore a doctor’s prescription is required for any mattress without wool. A box spring comprised of 72 or 81 coils is recommended for this mattress. The organic cotton mattress comes in three different firmness levels. The following coil counts are based on a full size mattress. There will be more coils in Queen and King and less in Twin. With that said : Firm (312 coils/full size), Extra Firm (510 coils/full size), and Super Firm (1000 coils/full size). All our mattresses are hand-made and can vary up to 1" in size. The following are general guidelines on the firmness of pillows:
Side sleepers prefer EXTRA FILL Back sleepers prefer MEDIUM Stomach sleepers prefer LIGHT Most of our pillows can be used with our wool neck roll. The wool and the cotton pillows will compress by one third. The kapok is similar to down in that it spreads out under your head and is very pliable. The latex is firm and supportive. Remember, choosing a pillow is a very personal selection.
Please feel free to contact us by phone or email if you need further help in choosing your pillow!

1) What type of Sleeper are you? Back, Side or Stomach? Back and stomach sleepers generally are more comfortable on a flatter and harder mattress. Side sleeper requires a little softer mattress to allow the hips and shoulders to sink in, allowing the mattress to support the side and therefore keeping the spine straight. 2) Do you have problems with pressure points? If you have pressure point problems, a softer mattress may be better. And adding extra cushioning like the 1-1/2 wool pad or the premium 3" wool pad adds extra comfort. 3) Do you think you want a mattress as firm as the floor? Most people who feel this way don't sleep all night on the floor. If you are one of the rare ones who can do this comfortably, then our hardest latex or cotton/wool extra firm mattresses would be the ideal choice. Most people need more cushioning than this. Consider that you need to lie comfortably on this 6-8 hours at a time. 4) Do you like a flat surface or do you want to feel like the mattress gently holds you? Latex gives the most solid, flat feel of our mattresses. To get the feeling that a mattress gently holds you, consider adding our 3" topper. You can get the cloud-like comfort without sacrificing support. 5) What age are you buying for? A 5-year old child will have different weight and support requirements than a 20-year old. Also think about how your body felt and all the changes you may have been feeling compared to 5 years ago? 10 years ago? Ask anyone in their 70's and they can tell you they feel more aches and pains than when they were in their 60's. Or someone in their 50's may start to feel the onset of arthritis and may mistake the pains as needing a firmer mattress instead of something with more cushioning. Ask yourself several questions and be very honest with yourself. How old are you? Or how old will be you be in 5 years? 10 years? Even though you may live a health, active life, our bodies change with time. Could your pains possibly be age-related? You may remember sleeping on the floor when you were younger. But do you still do that now? And are your still comfortable? Or do you get up slower and stiffer if you do this. Are there any old injuries that may start to surface? That may require support, yet more cushioning than you may have thought about? 6) Do you sleep hot? Everyone loses moisture when sleeping. Some people sleep hotter than others. If you are the type that sleeps hotter, wool is the perfect insulator. It will wick away moisture and provide a more comfortable sleeping environment. 7) What is your climate? Where do you live? In areas that are hotter and more humid, mold and mildew are a concern. Latex and wool are better choices for these areas.
Remember that choosing a mattress is a very personal choice. These are some guidelines and questions to ask yourself to help you can make the best decision for your sleeping comfort.
